Do I need a separate licence plate and registration for a trailer in Canada?
Yes, every province requires trailers used on public roads to be individually registered and to display a valid plate. Quebec's SAAQ, Ontario's ServiceOntario and equivalent provincial agencies issue trailer plates at modest annual fees that scale with gross vehicle weight rating. The tow vehicle's plate does not extend to the trailer. You will also need the trailer's VIN, proof of ownership and, in many provinces, a safety or mechanical inspection before the first registration if the trailer was built or bought out of province. Keep registration papers in the tow vehicle, because roadside checks routinely verify trailer plates on long weekends.
